Mountain Odyssey and Bear Camp

Schoolhouse of Wonder has worked to teach and share the skills of wilderness survival and awareness with children for many years.  To meet the needs of different age groups we have decided to offer a second backpacking camp so as to provided an adequate challenge to those children interested in their relationship with the Earth.

Mountain Odyssey, our backpacking camp for younger campers (10-13 years) will return to Grayson Highlands, Mt. Rogers, Virginia to embark upon a week of wilderness and backpack camping.  Sunsets, sunrises, star-filled night skies, fresh meadow blueberries, fire-baked brownies and cold mountain streams are all a part of this phenomenal adventure.

Our new site exploration for the older campers (14-17 years), Bear Camp centers around the idea of living more harmoniously with the Earth and with each other.  Developing respect for the natural world is at the essence of our heart-filled adventure in the wilderness.  This year’s expedition will also go to Grayson Highlands located near Wilson, Virginia. It is a beautiful mountain area with balds, blueberries, and wild ponies. It is about 3.5 hours away.

Both of these wilderness excursions will include:

  • A day-long “walkabout” adventure in the wilderness
  • Community living
  • Camp craft
  • Directions and mapping
  • Cooking on the fire
  • Meal preparations
  • Naturalist skills
  • Night hike and stargazing
