Imagine life as it was lived in the Piedmont more than 500 years ago. Discover the lifestyles of the Native Americans of this area through games, interactive demonstration, and direct experience. Earth skills such as friction fire-making and trapping are just a part of this exciting, well-loved program.
This is one of our most popular fall offerings! It is an active and engaging opportunity to experience history first hand. With a focus on the life skills and survival techniques of the southeastern Indians, this program adds flavor to any classroom history curriculum. This program makes a great complement to our Early American Life classes.
The class includes:
- Team effort to make a friction fire using our large-scale bow-drill
- Opportunities to touch and feel a deer hide, gourd bowls, and many other objects of daily life
- Practice fishing with our wooden fish spear
- Students will test their skills by throwing corncob darts
- Bow and arrow demonstration
- Spring trap and deadfall trap demonstration
This class has a packet of online resources available for download. Use these resources as preparation to bring your group to our program, or as followup after your day at the park.
