Scout Camps

What is a Scout?

Traveling alone or in small teams, the native scouts were the eyes and ears of their people. A scout dedicated their life to the survival and safe passage of their people, putting the needs of their brothers and sisters before their own. Scouts maintained the skills of wilderness awareness, survival, and tracking at a level far beyond what most people can imagine. A scout also worked for peace, dedicating themselves to care for those whom they loved.

What is Scout Camp?

At Schoolhouse of Wonder we will work to recreate the experience of being a native scout through these camps. The later camps always include further development of skills learned in earlier ones, so for a complete idea of the camp please review all of the camp descriptions in this theme.

South Scout

This camp for ages 7-9 ends at 5pm and has a staff:camper ratio of 1:8.

In South Scout campers learn to establish a sense of awareness to the world around them, while building a strong sense of community with one another. We will learn how to move silently like a fox and graceful like a deer as we go on secret scout missions with our group. We will honor and learn from each other, as well as from the forest around us. We will enjoy awareness games, simple bird language, and earth crafts.

Activities may include:

  • Awareness and stalking games
  • Scout missions
  • Hiding games & camouflage techniques
  • Stories of ancient scouts

North Scout

This camp for ages 9-12 ends at 5pm and has a staff:camper ratio of 1:8.

While reviewing and expanding upon the skills of South Scout camp, campers will go further into the world of the scout. This camp will refine scout skills and allow campers to experience what it was like to be a part of a scout team. The level of scout missions will provide a higher challenge as the week progresses; teamwork and problem solving will be essential. All of these skills will come together on for an overnight adventure.

Campers may expect to participate in the following skills and activities:

  • Silent communication
  • Team movement
  • Mapping
  • Invisible survival
  • Tracking/counter tracking
